What is an cortijo?

Wikipedia teaches us that a cortijo is a type of traditional rural dwelling in the southern half of Spain, especially in Andalusia.

Cortijos may have their origins in ancient Roman villas, for the word derives from the Latin cohorticulum, a diminutive of cohors, meaning farm or inner enclosure. Cortijos are often associated with large family farms with livestock grazing in the neighboring lands.

A cortijo would typically include a large house, along with several buildings such as workers' quarters, barns, granaries, and oil mills. The owner usually lived with his family in a two-story building when he visited the farm, while simpler buildings were for the farm workers and their families - also known as cortijeros.

At Cortijo de la Paz the pastures are not there anymore, but the old farmhouse is still waiting for your visit.
